Job Description
TheraJoy is a Pasadena-based digital health startup building tools for EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) bilateral stimulation — the alternating left-right sensory pulses used in trauma therapy and stress regulation. Our iOS app already delivers haptic bilateral stimulation through Nintendo Joy-Con controllers (one per hand), AirPods stereo tones, and iPhone side-tap haptics, with Apple Watch support shipping next. No accounts, no cloud storage — everything runs on-device.
We’re now building Pebble, our first dedicated hardware product: a pair of palm-sized, purpose-built haptic devices designed specifically for bilateral stimulation (68mm wide, 82g, 40-hour battery, silent operation), shipping late 2026. Pebble is designed to be a natural extension of the Joy-Con-based experience we’ve already validated with users and clinicians.
What you’ll do:
- Own iOS development for our core app, including the Joy-Con / GameController framework integration that drives bilateral haptic timing
- Build the companion app and pairing/firmware-update flow for Pebble, our custom BLE haptic hardware
- Design low-latency, precisely-timed haptic and audio feedback loops (CoreHaptics, AVFoundation) where sub-50ms accuracy matters clinically
- Implement remote session pairing (6-character codes) so clinicians can run EMDR protocols with clients live
- Ship privacy-first: on-device processing only, no analytics, no user accounts
What we’re looking for:
- Strong Swift/SwiftUI experience shipping production iOS apps
- Experience with Bluetooth LE (Core Bluetooth) and/or the GameController framework (Joy-Con, MFi controllers)
- Comfort with real-time/low-latency systems (haptics, audio, or similar)
- Interest in mental health, wellness, or clinical/therapy tech — you don’t need a clinical background, but you should care about the mission
- Bonus: experience with embedded/BLE firmware, CoreHaptics, or building for Apple Watch
